How Can The Client Help Their Case?

The client and the attorney are a team and as a team they need to have clear goals, good communication, and reasonable expectations. The client can help their attorney (and keep their fees down) by following a few rules:

  1. Identify your goals concisely and logically at the beginning or your case.  This will help your lawyer know what is important to you, and will also keep you focused when emotions get in the way of clear thinking.
  2. Educate yourself about your case and the applicable laws.  Ask your lawyer for a bibliography of suggested reading, including copies of key laws that apply to your case.  Judges are required to make detailed findings for disputed cases involving equitable distribution, alimony, child support, parenting factors, relocation, and attorneys fees.  Your written analysis of each of the applicable factors is an efficient and quick way of giving your lawyer essential information early in the litigation process.
