The Coleman-Lienhart Savage Garden is moving to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota!

The Savage Garden is moving to a new home! We wanted to provide an update to Tampa families concerning the Coleman-Lienhart Savage Garden exhibit at MOSI, created and donated by Jeanne Coleman and her husband, Steve.

The Savage Garden is a unique collection of carefully selected carnivorous plants including Venus Flytraps, Pitcher Plants, Sundews, Butterworts, and Bladderworts, as well as epiphytes and mosses all anchored by foundational rocks and fauna, and nurtured by a specially engineered watering system to help the plants thrive. The entire structure that houses the Savage Garden exhibit was built specifically to support this special ecosystem. The plants have flourished since the installation was opened to the public in 2015, as part of the MOSI BioWorks Butterfly Garden.

With the news that MOSI would be undergoing significant changes in the near future, Jeanne and Steve began a search for a new ‘home’ for the exhibit, a place that is focused on environmental conservation and education.

Luckily, such a place exists, and not too far down the road from Tampa. The exquisite Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida is the urban oasis that will become home to the Savage Garden. The Selby Gardens are known as a world-class center for education, research and conservation. The facility is a living museum of tropical epiphytes including orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads and ferns.

The move is underway and we are excited to have a permanent home for this very special collection of carnivorous plants. Developing the Savage Garden has been a labour of love! It has been so rewarding to see the plants grow and be appreciated by the families and students that have visited MOSI. If you’re in Sarasota, schedule a trip to Selby Gardens to see how the Savage Garden is thriving!
