Jeanne L. Coleman

I have been practicing marital and family law for over 38 years. After witnessing the reality of traditional litigated divorce early in my career, I came to enthusiastically support mediation and collaborative law to resolve family law issues without litigation.

During my career, I have continued training and gaining certifications to enable me to provide courtless divorce assistance to my clients. I am a Florida Supreme Court Family Law Certified Mediator, trained in Collaborative Law, and member of the Next Generation Collaborative Group.

I love the Tampa Bay community and the many opportunities it offers for growth and culture. I am a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Orchestra and serve as the orchestra’s Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and was past chair of the Community Engagement Committee. I am a past member of the Board of Directors of the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa.

I love music and playing the piano. I enjoy hosting professional musicians and intimate chamber concerts in my home. I love the outdoors and especially enjoy hiking, cycling, swimming in a master’s program and practicing yoga.

I take Spanish classes at the University of South Florida and travel periodically to Oaxaca to study Spanish at the Instituto de Oaxaca.

My clients often describe me as caring and tenacious. I am dedicated to alternative resolution of parties’ disputes to reduce family conflict, save family resources for the family, and timely resolution of disputes.

Diversity Experience:

Cultural sensitivity is extremely important to me and I try to evaluate my actions with a Diversity, Equity and Inclusive (DEI) view. I have been fortunate to participate in numerous DEI trainings over the years and continually read books to enhance my knowledge and sensitivity.

I am Chair of The Florida Orchestra DEI Standing Committee. I am a member of the Hillsborough County Bar Association DEI Committee, and a member of the League of Women Voters DEI Committee.

My cases have reflected the diversity of the Tampa Bay community. I have represented African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, and Native Americans. I have also handled many Muslim divorces.

For years, I have handled LGTBQ cases, which now are much simpler because of the recognition of same-sex marriage.

Although not a cultural or ethnic group, military members have been a constant among my clients. Family law military matters demand specialized knowledge of the stresses imposed by military service on the family and children. I was a volunteer lawyer for the American Bar Association (ABA) Family Law Section’s Military Committee during the first Gulf War. The committee partnered with Operation Standby and I regularly assisted military personnel in the United States and abroad.

I have volunteered through the League of Women Voters to represent “returning citizens” seeking to establish their right to vote under Amendment 4, Voting Restoration for Felons.

I am committed to responding to the Tampa Bay community’s needs and to abide by the oath I took in 1977 when I was sworn into the Florida Bar. This is an oath I repeat each year at the Hillsborough County Bar Association annual meeting:

“I will never reject, from any consideration personal to myself, the cause of the defenseless or oppressed, or delay anyone’s cause for lucre or malice. So help me God”.

“Having Jeanne and her staff helped me get through the up-and-down moments I was feeling. They were a caring legal team who I could trust, and were always there for me when I needed reassurance and direction.”

J.V. Tampa Client

E.R. Tampa Client

“During a divorce, you’re so anxious and stressed that sometimes you don’t even know what to ask. Jeanne helped me think of things that I hadn’t considered, like the fact that I needed to write a new will after the divorce. Because our divorce was amicable, I believe it’s possible now for my ex-husband and me to be flexible. My daughter doesn’t hear her parents being angry. I feel that I came out of my divorce with everything that I had hoped for.”

AX Tampa Client

“Jeanne’s goal is to represent her clients fairly and to keep things amicable as much as possible so that everyone gets what he/she needs and the children are kept uppermost in mind as priorities–which is how it should be. Jeanne is straightforward, matter of fact, knowledgeable, and supportive.”

AVVO Client Review

“The Coleman Law group were much like a really supportive family at a dark and tragic time in my life. No detail was overlooked and for the team’s effort, my life is back on course and moving forward.”
